Spring is almost here and the warm days of beautiful sunshine bring out the gardener in many of us. It’s very cathartic and rewarding to watch the growth and maturity of flowers and vegetables from your own hand. It gives a sense of accomplishment and at the same time, appreciation of nature. Just because you are renting doesn’t mean you can’t have your garden. There are plenty of options for gardening in a rental property regardless of your living accommodations but it is critical to get permission from your landlord. Some may not mind you tilling up the backyard while others absolutely forbid it. In any case, if there’s a will, there’s a way!

In short, the answer is container gardening. Regardless of the amount of space you have, there’s a container that will fit the bill. Evaluate your possible areas and make a plan. Here are some ideas to inspire you and you can also read this article from Bonnie Plant Farms with plans for different kinds of gardens.

Balcony – If you live in an upstairs condo or apartment, use the available space. Here are some truly creative ways to get the biggest bang for your buck. As long as sunlight is available, you can grow flowers and vegetables in a variety of containers.

Patio or Porch – A patio or porch is ideal for container gardens. If you have very limited space, group your containers together or stack them. Let your creative side dictate color and shapes to give your garden an artistic flair.

Small Yard – Even if you have a tiny yard there’s a way to use your green thumb. A container doesn’t have to be a pot. Look around your home and see what you have on hand. Using the untraditional can be a conversation piece.
